I'm sure that you've all seen this effect on various site where a colour fades from grey when you rollover a button. As someone who doesn't really use flash very often (I don't particularly get on with it much) I was wondering if you guys could help me out with acheiving this effect.

Point me to a tutorial or just tell me what needs to be done, any help is greatly appreciated :-)

Here is what I came up with. I have a movie clip with some simple color fades on it, with stop();s on every frame. On the main stage, I use a hitTest to see if the user has moused over the movie clip, if so, then nextFrame() else, prevFrame(). You'll be able to figure it out looking at the .fla file. I would just put an invisible button over top of it for my actions.
