    here is the code from my key frame in my preloader:

    // find out how much data has loaded
    //count=int(_root.getBytesLoaded()/1024)+"KB";
    //total=int(_root.getBytesTotal()/1024)+"KB";
    percentage=int((_root.getBytesLoaded()/_root.getBytesTotal())*100)+"%";
    status="Loading...";
    //set the x scale of the loadbar
    Loadbar_size=int((_root.getBytesLoaded()/_root.getBytesTotal())*100);
    setProperty("loadbar",_xscale,loadbar_size);
    //check if all data is loaded
    if(_root.getBytesLoaded()!=_root.getBytesTotal()){
    gotoAndPlay("preloader", 1);
    }else{
    percentage="100%";
    status="Loaded!";
    setProperty("loadbar",_xscale,"100");
    gotoAndPlay("intro", 1);
    }

    this is in a scene called preloader.
    and once done, it goes to a scene called intro.
    I also have a layer containing 2 dynamic text fileds, one called status, and the other percentage
    the third layer in the movie contains the loadbar graphic.

    just a quick reminder, the setProperty function is outdated or whatever Flash calls it. You can change that script to:
    _root.loadbar._width(or _xscale) = whatever
