How can I create a swatch that has diagonal lines so that it gets a clean repeat, without steps?

You need 2 stripe fragments in your square - one from the center-line diagonal (bottom left corner to top right corner), and extended out towards the top left corner for whatever your thickness is... then a second fragment on the bottom right corner extending out towards the top left corner.

Your best bet is to draw several stripes and crop them into a pattern of this configuration.
