I am somewhat new to Illustrator and vector images in general. I've been practicing with various vector logos that I've collected, and I've come across a problem that I can't seem to solve...

On some images (not all of them), there are times when I'll want to add a white border around the edges, so that darker colors show up better against, say, a black page or w/e. Now, I know how to make such a keyline by using a stroke, but my problem is that sometimes images will apply such a stroke to both sides of a specific area or region, when I only want to side that faces away from the center of the image to have the keyline.

It's kind of tricky to explain, so I'll attach two files that I'm just playing around with (they're not mine, I take no credit for the images.) One of them has a nice, thick, white background. The second image does not, and that's what I can't seem to be able to do. I can't get a white background to appear on the outside edge of the image... it wants to apply itself over the inner parts, too.

I guess my real question is... How do you create such keylines like that? With just the stroke tool, or do I have to mess with settings like Offset Path and what not?
