I am pretty new to illustrator and was wondering if someone could give me some hints as to how to create a "ribbon/tapered line" that wraps around the earth from skinny at bottom to thick at the top almost like a jet line from a plane like the one in the picture below but the skinny/tapered part at the bottom and wrapping 3 times to come out the top thicker (no plane needed)

    Any advice is greatly appreciated

Couldn't you use the spiral tool, and skew it out of axis? I use freehand but I would assume theres a spiral tool in illustrator.
    Peace, Mike

Personally, I would create a new art brush that is tapered the way you want it to be, then just create a path with the pen tool around the earth, apply the brush, then expand it (BECAUSE STROKES AREN'T GOOD!) and you're done. It's probably about 4 minutes worth of work.
