Yea the paint bucket wont work. instead click the line with the black arrow tool, and look above that tool. There should be a fill button and a line color button. try those.

here's a screen shot of what I get for options up top when I click on the black arrow tool. i've played around with the boxes to the left of the word stroke but the color never ends up changing. i've also clicked on "recolor artwork" to the left of "transform" on the right-hand side and those changes do not take affect either. any ideas?

Next to Group at the top there is a ? and a square with an x through it. try changing the color with that. you can double click to put the hex code in Make sure your object is highlighted first though.

Yeah, it's not working out. What's happening is it's filling in some of the space that the line/curve fills.
How should I send the AI?

So basically the issue you had was you were trying to change the fill of strokes. If you click on one of the elements and look to the bottom left (maybe half way between the top and bottom) you will see 2 squares one in front of the other. One is your fill color and the other is your stroke color (stroke is another term for border line) if you want the same color for both just double click the box's one at a time. select a color and click ok. Job done
