    Problem using pathfinder tool

    Hi,

I have a circle 'shape' I'm trying to cut into a crescent shape. The thing is this 'shape' is made up of non intersecting lines - as you can see in the attached file.

Prior to using minus back on the combined shapes ie. the line shape and cutter shape - I've tried grouping, expanding and forming the line shape into a compound path.

Then, having combined the line shape and the circle that will cut the crescent shape from the line shape, I use minus back in pathfinder. The result always seems to be the same - the line shape disappears.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this please ?

Here is a visual of what I'm trying to do.

Select both shapes and hit Cntrl+M on your keyboard (Cmnd+M on mac). This will open up the shape builder tool. Using this you can combine and remove shapes from overlapping shapes. You will need to make sure you are removing the shape which will be shown by a "-" by the cursor. This is assuming you are doing this in Illustrator and that you have already expanded the shapes by going to Object>Expand in the top menu.

I tried what you said but when I apply minus back the result is that only one of the lines are cut and the remaining lines disappear - as can be seen below. Pathfinder problem 1.jpg

No, see you do not need the path finder or minus back. You will use the shape builder tool and hold Alt (i believe) so that it has a minus in the cursor. Then you can click the shapes you wish to delete. To get to the shape builder tool you press Control or command on a mac, and M.

If you HAVE to do it using the path finder tool you will need to select each line and delete them individually from the other shape.
