    are png images are a good idea or bad idea to use on websites, because i want to use the transparency feature

    I just thought i better get opinions because i have only used them once before and that was not for the web

    They're good, but the variable transparency is very badly supported in all browsers. See the tutorial here on how to get it working in IE.

    PNG Transparency support sux in IE. You will need to use the work around that was posted in the Tutorials forum a while ago by filburt.

    when i used png before i used layers in photoshop and had the background as transparent. I don't think this works on the web, i havent tried it yet

    GIFs only have either opacity 100% or complete transparency, so it's not possible to truly antialias the edge of an image with transparency.

    Yes you can, but the support for PNG format is not as widespread as GIF or JPEG.
