I need to know the best way for my client to keep track of visitors to specific pages. Specifically, an asepct of the site will have definitions of terms based on 3 levels. For example, let's pretend that it's Country, State, and City. He wants to be able to keep track of how many users are visiting each countries page, how many users are visiting each states page, and how many users are keeping track of each cities page.

What would be best to do this? What can Google Analytics provide me in regards to this?

If you've got a Windows server, a custom 404 and some rewriting in ASP or .NET would do the trick.

So www.domain.com/white-america-by-eminem/ could be directed to www.domain.com/countries.asp with a session variable passed to indicate the country. (Man, that domain.com gets so many links from stuff.)

If they're external sites, or if you just want to track them with a bit of extra code, you could use event tracking.

Or you could just set up "static" pages for all of the place if they're not going to change much.

Personally, I'd pick the custom 404 route. It's not an easy task no matter how you slice it, though.

Thanks. I was hoping there'd just be a Google tool for this, but oh well.

Sorry for the double post. Won't most hosting companies track this information anyway?

"Kind of". They've got raw logs and you can get something along the lines of AWStats to interpret them.

The flaw there is that a lot of the tracking software doesn't track querystrings (if you were going to do something like that) and it isn't updated, so bots can go through and be tracked as users. So you get an overestimation of your actual traffic.

Analytics is an underestimation, on the other hand, but at least everything it counts is user traffic.

    Hi AK

If you're simply wanting to track pageviews, Google Analytics will allow you to keep track of specific pages within the "content" report. Aslong as the analytics code is on the page you can track it.
