I am trying to upload a theme to my blog through the dashboard and when I hit install i get this message,

Unable to create directory /usr/local/pem/vhosts/136422/webspace/httpdocs/**********/wp-content/uploads/2011/04. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

Can anybody help with this? I tried google but it doesn't find any matches.

It sounds as if the directory you are trying to upload to does not have the proper permissions set. It will need to be 755.

Some hosting providers have scripts that setup wordpress for you on their servers. Their scripts usually set the permissions correctly on the WP install.

If you have a control panel with your web hosting provider, browse to the folders that WP are installed in, find the upload folders, and set the permission to "write", if you have the ability to select users, make sure the "system" account has write permissions on the upload folder.

Many times this is an overlooked part of the instructions of a WP install, but it causes no problems until you want to use something other than the default templates that it came with.

I have seen some smaller providers have the installer script set correctly, but the permissions on this folder are not set properly for security reasons... Perhaps your hosting provider has "tech support" that can set the permissions correctly for you.

I suggest you to upload files on your server through FTP or Cpanel. Then you will be able to make any settings step by step using any browser.
