I have recently been asked to design a website for a computer technician who repairs computers and they would like a live chat function where people can talk with them.
What would be the best way of adding this?

There are also some HOSTED options... so depending on your actual hosting situation and skill level...

Some chat scripts utilize a lot of resources ( since they are not really optimized, they work.. using protocols that are not necessarily suited... but they do work).

most of the hosted applications are pretty reasonable in cost... and the load will on will not be on your server.

Just another option.. probably the most costly, but easiest to implement.

If you have a Joomla integrated site...(highly recommended) you can download a free "Live Chat" module for the site.

Give that a go. I haven't used it yet as our company is in the beginning stages. But if there is anywhere you can do it. Joomla is the best place to go.

You can add hosted chat as suggested here by WebZarus.
There are many good ones, but you should make sure to choose HTML5 chats as they are available also on your mobile devices.

    Try RumbleTalk or C-box
