I have a new client that is wanting a huge project. This will be a major learning curve and i feel i would be more than happy to take on the challenge. The client wants the ability to assign users with their own blogs for a church that he can manage their posts. Ive thought of joomla or wordpress. However im new to both nor do i know where to research on how to execute this so i will be spending a lot of time learning. Any suggestions?? They are wanting to have about 6 area, such as youth, that can post pictures of their events post announcements and it all has to integrate with the main site.

Joomla's user account system is pretty extensive, and should work well for something like that. I'd also venture a guess that there is likely a Wordpress extension with similar features, which is the way I'd go since you're talking about a blog. There's also Wordpress Multisite, which there's plenty of info here to start you down that path.
