I'm creating a WordPress website which will have a members area. I want to make the members menu pages hidden from guest users. So when someone logs into the website they will see it. Also how would I make these pages appear in the side bar? The member area needs to be secure and will also involve a forum.
The members area will have over 250 members
    is this possible?

For a membership site, or a site with parts that are for members only, check out the Buddypress plugin.

If you have the cash ($89), I suggest you at least have a look at Cart66 for Wordpress. It has a membership function and will also handle once off or recurring payments. You can also sell digital products using it. There is a free version of Cart66, but I don't know if it supports the membership features.
