    That did the trick, except formally my web site would load, now it gets a 404 error. To solve that, I put this line back in;
    RewriteRule . <web site> [L]

    Unfortunately, I'm getting an error by FireFox that the page isn't redirecting properly.

    Edit: I put this line back
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f

    The page loads again, except the 404 problem returns ARGHH.

    That means you've got something else going on with your site that goes beyond the .htaccess file. At this point, your best bet would be to put everything back the way it was and show us the site and hopefully someone else can come up with something.

    Hopefully someone else can give some input as to why, this has been an issue for a long time

    Edit: I found the line in htaccess that is the problem

    ErrorDocument 404 /404.html

    is what you would place in your .htaccess file to send 404 errors to your 404.html page
