    i have a form (php) submitting data to a MySQL db table, one of the fiends has "not null" set to it. but why if i dont enter anything into the form, it fills the space with a blank ?

    Yeah and????

    It's meant to coz it wont allow null values so it fills in it's default value.

    why would the default value be null if i specifically tell it it isnt allowed to be null ?

    Null is zilch nothing, a space press is a character!!
    Therefore making it not null!
    The default character isnt null it's a space.
