Just as I was beginning to understand the whole reputation thing, I got thrown a curve ball... I generally check who/when/why I got a reputation thing, and same goes for the reputations of other people who I see fairly regularly...

So, today I notice someone with a negative reputation. That seems odd. So, I click. Someone had given negative points inside a post. Value at 4x. The particular person who gave the negative has in his favor 6 reputation points. So I'm confused on two levels...

1- Why if someone is given negative reputation, does that person have a negative ranking at 100%?

2- How does someone w/ 6 points attach a quantity of points greater than 1?

    It looks normal.

Reputation power is based on a combination of the number of posts you've made, how long you've been registered here, your own reputation level, etc. It varies wildly per person. I have a power of 41 by virtue that I've been registered the longest. Most people have around 5. Some people have 10 and higher. New registrants have 1.

Okay, so the quantity of points you have doesn't necessarily directly exactly reflect the strength of your "vote."

It is an influencing factor, but just one of the many that come into play. Exactly how it works is not public knowledge to prevent abuse of the system.
