I just noticed this with the Martian Web Design post in SotM.

In forum view, you see the first ~10 words of the first post in each thread.

However, if the first post is not being shown because the user was banned or whatever, you still get this preview.

It's just a bug. Maybe you let us see what banned users say, except under exceptional circumstances, so we can laugh at the crazy guys!

What preview - I only see the post titles.

How do you see the preview for posts ?

The previews only work in good browsers (basically they don't work in non-standards compliant browsers). The work in Firefox and probably others too, but definately not Internet Explorer.

It works on IE 6, not IE 5 I think.

Didn't work for me when I used IE6 to check it out just now...

Thread previews are disabled in all versions of IE.

I asked a while ago at vB.com about this and it can't be done because the usergroupid is not one of the elements stored along with the thread preview.

OK, just thought I'd point it out. So the preview isn't inner-joined from the thread ID and posts table, it's in the thread table. Interesting.

The previews themselves are cached for performance. A lot of data is missing from templates (i.e, variables) for speed. vB3 is far more efficient than vB2.
