I think it will be an instant messaging client. Like (G)IM. Just thinking of all the possible ways they could tie it into the existing technology they now wield (GMail, searching, etc) could spawn a ton of potential Google Labs projects....

    Edit:
Well, after looking around at (well what do you know?) Google for a while, I see the idea is not something that is new, but I just thought of it and went off on a mental tangent...it's an interesting topic, I think, and I doubt it's not too far down the road (especially with all the speculation floating around the web).

Google very rarely has developed anything for client-side use (i.e., Windows programs).

They may not have developed them in the past, but recent aquisitions (Picasa) may say otherwise for the future.

Well their primary revenue stream is the AdSense system. They have an excellent backend that can parse any content and target ads to it automatically. That's how they make money from searching and gmail. They would need to run it on their servers, so it has to be server-side (googlebar being the only exception I know of).

Now, if you want to go off on creative tangents, just think of any web-based server-side text based content that adsense would work on, and you'll have a nice target. Google Hosting anyone?

I read somewhere that google is planning a IM service. I don't remember the name, but it has a "k" in it

They just released a small utility that lets you search your PC and email using the google engine! It's a standalone utility, although when you go to the google site it shows a new link for Desktop searching. It's in beta of course.

They also have a friends network beta around, but it's VERY low key. The next google rumor is a web browser.
