Should I put a blank robots.txt file in order to prevent the 404 error code. Or will putting a blank robots.txt have a detrimental effect?

If you are trying to minimize the # of 404 errors you receive, then place a blank one.

I suggest using robots.txt for what its meant to be used. To understand more, you can go to http://www.searchengineworld.com/rob...s_tutorial.htm
