Whenever I open IE 6, this annoying search bar comes up and sits just above my task bar. It has an X (to close I presume ) but a click does nothing.

Anyone know what this is and how to get rid? I have attached screenshot

It looks like a typical malware install (a bundled package that piggyback some free software you've installed).

If the originators have any sort of moral, it should be 'un-installable' through the list on your 'add/delete-programs' menu.

If not, you should look for it in your registry (after exhausting different spy detecting software to no avail)

Or: do not open IE again ? :P

I have studied my add/remove list and nothing un recognised. I run Ad-aware every morning, as well as S+D.

    Cheers

    Download this:
    HijackThis

Post the log here or over @ house of help in the spyware section. I can tell you what to remove on the list to remove it.

Thing is it looks very xp ish, like some msn add on.

I like my idea of not opening IE again, but other users of my computer dont like the tabs idea in FF...

Well... You don't have to use tabs if you don't want to. Though I can't for the life of me understand why you wouldn't want to.

    Agreed, best browser add-on ever!

bfsog, your problem sounds exactly like what you suspect, an MSN add on!

My wife (which is a complete computer illiterate) has that bar (and a bundle of others).
When I browse through the "add/remove" box on her computer, it's listed as an additional MSN service (courtesy of BG).

If you have a newer version of MSN-Messenger installed, try to uninstall/reinstall.
During re-install, make sure you 'untick' the option of having the MSN search bar.
