Just today, I found out nvidia had released a beta version of its 9xxx series drivers for Linux. So I installed them, excitedly, as they allow X.org to use compositing managers for awesome eye candy. And guess what? I have it!

I installed the beta drivers and beryl -- the community fork of the relatively well-known (in the eye candy community) compiz, originally by Novell. And hawt damn. I have all these shiny Exposť-like features, plus some pretty shiny extras here and there (like what I consider to be very nice feedback for launching and closing windows).

There's also a weird little effect where you can have raindrops on your screen. And a wiper. That pair is very strange. Plus desktop switching happens on a virtual cube. I'm happy :-) Just thought I'd share.

I have Vista RC1 on my laptop, so in between the bluescreens, I see pointless effects too.

After the crap with Vista RC1 I had to go through this morning on my laptop, I'm going to try out OSX86. I do have a copy of Mac OS X...although yes, I know that doesn't help matters.

:-) KScreensaver seems to crash beryl on my computer, but other than that the only trouble I've experienced was when enabling the experimental effects (motion blur and reflection). That smashed X into little bits and pieces (figuratively speaking -- what I actually had to do was login remotely and kill it).

Well I gave up with OSX86. Several tries, no drivers, wildly varying performance...yeah, I'm regressing to SuSE Linux 10.1, same as my home server.

I went from XP MCE to XP Pro to Vista to OSX86 to SuSE Linux 10.1. I'm running out here. Maybe BeOS next.

There's always Kubuntu if SuSE doesn't work out.

Okay, I got everything working for SuSE Linux 10.1 using Gnome. I also installed the nVidia drivers, although I didn't necessarily need them, for my Geforce 7400 Go. So how do I have sexy eye candy pointless GUI effects?

Mmm, it's a difficult one. You'll have to get the beta 1.0.9265 drivers off the NVIDIA site. Then you have to hunt down either compiz RPMs or beryl/emerald (both) RPMs. That should get you some pointless eyecandy. It bears noting that this stuff is extremely unstable. I'm considering dropping it for a while to see if it stabilizes a little :-P

LOL, http://en.opensuse.org/Using_Xgl_on_...iguring_Compiz works and it's hilariously cool. Much better than Vista, and a much higher framerate on top of that.
