Is there some way of setting up an advanced filter with gmail?

Gmail is already filtering out just under 3000 articles of spam a month yet i keep getting through poorly written e-mails from random e-mail addresses saying something like this.

Because it is coming from so many different e-mail addresses gmail can't filter it out. Any ideas on how i can stop this?

Do the addresses go into your spam folder or your inbox?
I get a few in the spam box but i never read them just delete and usually dont hear from them again... suppose you could create filters so you dont recieve emails with certain words.

GMail clears all my spam just fine. Couple of years ago at an old job, a couple of us made spam GMail accounts, and purposely got as much spam as possible. GMail got 99% of it, no problem.

If you make sure to report them as spam, you should be fine. Gmail's spam filter is adaptive -- a Bayesian filter, if I'm not mistaken -- so it should get more accurate the more missed spam you report.

Even though gmail does get spam still, I think it is loads better than hotmail, yahoo mail e.t.c. Even an email on your own domain.

Yea, I have only got 1 spam in my inbox and I have had Gmail for over a year and a half. I do get about 50 spam messages a day from entering contests, but, they are caught and sent to the spam folder.
