Which McAfee program are you attempting to install? Have you checked with McAfee to see if it's compatible with Vista?

McAfee is garbage. I use AVG Free on my desktop and Avast on my laptop; both use Windows Defender that's built into Vista.

total protection is even worse then mcafee. Also norton internet security, and any of those "all the protection you need" software. Its all bloatware. bloatware means its software that puts all the features that the other software has, but not well.

According to Leo Laporte, this is all you need
    • AVG free
    • Microsoft Defender (Pre-installed with Vista)
    • Spybot S&D
    • Ad-aware
    • Microsoft Firewall
    • A router (hardware)

    hope this helps

EDIT: I forgot one thing. Are you using windows 64bit edition? because software (mostly with security software) puts rootkits on windows. Windows 64-bit version made it so that if there is a rootkit on the system, Windows will shutdown.

PS: I used the edit button, which seems to be a problem with some users latly.
