I really need it though...but I also prefer keeping my $1,971.93. And I don't want to compromise any of the components above.

    My current system:
    • Windows Vista Business
    • Pentium 4 2.6 GHz, overclocked to 3.01 GHz
    • 1 GB DDR 400 memory
    • Lots of hard drives, but the system is on 10,000 RPM RAID 0 SATA drives (2x 36 GB, the first generation of Raptors)
    • Geforce 6800, unlocked and overclocked to something near a Geforce 6800 GT or 6800 Ultra

It feels slower and slower each day. The 1.66 GHz Core Duo in my laptop is faster for God's sake. And there's no part of the system I can upgrade cost-efficiently--all four memory slots are full, a processor upgrade is rarely cost-efficient, the hard drives are already much faster than a standard IDE or single SATA drive, the video card is almost maxing out the AGP bus...

I just priced an almost equivalent laptop from Dell. $5,100. No thanks.

... You don't need a GeForce 8800GTS... What are you going to be doing on this thing, rendering a Pixar movie in real time??

Something similar goes for 4 GB of RAM. Running ten instances of Eclipse?

I'll buy that you're not willing to compromise, but you won't convince me you need this :-P

I just wanted anything from the Geforce 8 series besides the lowest model, and that was it.

Vista + Eclipse + Outlook + iTunes + etc. = more than 2 GB useful

Speaks to the memory usage of Outlook and iTunes, I guess... I can usually run vim, eclipse, kontact, gaim (or kopete), KDE, and firefox (for long stretches of time -- so memory leaking included) without using too much more than 1 GB. The other 0.5 tend to go to the cache and buffer stuff. And in the background, naturally, apache, mysql, and an instance or two of mongrel hang out happily.

Then again, I'm looking to buy a laptop and looking at 2GB, too, but that's mostly so I can tell people `I've got 2 GB of RAM!!' :-P

Ooooh. Thing is, that translates to 20.000.000 rupiah (my currency), and that's equal to, err, about at least 200 client works or about... 2000 days (approx 5.4 years) of my daily allowance. Ouch.

I've always got some basics running... Apache and mysql of course, then I have a bunch of background applications. Kinda tough on my just enough RAM.

Man I wish I had a better graphics card. Although if you work in the game industry, I suppose when testing you should always do so on a "standard" computer. You don't want only people with 2gb ram/2gb empty hard disk space/top-of-the-line graphics card/massive processor to be able to play your game. Or any application, for that matter.

Well, I have a 1.3 GHz Athlon XP and 512 MB RAM. I'm lucky if I can run Visual Studio and anything else at the same time. Try adding iTunes and Firefox to that and I'm in for a heck of a time.
