Cute commercials, but how well does RoR scale? I thought I heard that it sucks wind when you get too many concurrent users.

It scales fine if you're willing to throw additional hardware at it. Not sure exactly how well it scales otherwise.

EDIT: A more complete answer is that it can scale.

But apparently a site on the scale of Twitter won't work with RoR...

It's unfortunate that there seems to be a missing link to the original article, which is here: http://www.radicalbehavior.com/5-que...er-alex-payne/

If you read that -- and reread that sentence you quoted there -- you'll find that he hardly said it _didn't scale_. He said that it wasn't as fun to scale Rails as it was to develop in Rails without scaling. So scaling's uglier than not: what else is new?

Moreover, shortly after his post (his main complaint was that there was no easy way to use multiple databases from Rails), Dr Nic released a Rails plugin to implement just that (in something like 70-80 lines of Ruby code, no less).

That, amongst other things, is what makes Rails -- and its community -- rock.

But yeah, as Alex said, Ruby is slow. No doubt about that one. Then again, how often do you make a site that needs to scale to that level? Twitter's got some pretty insane amounts of traffic.

    4000 requests per second? Impressive.
