Is it sensible to use an off the shelve wordpress template on a large site?

I have a website with around 10,000 posts +. The website needs a makeover and some improvements in functionality. As such, instead of using a a web designer to build an entirely new template for wordpress we may use a pre exisiting template (off the shelf from a site like themeforest) and have a designer edit this. We hope this will save time and money.

Is using a pre exisiting template a good idea for a site of this size? Any other reasons why this would be a bad idea?

    Thanks
