I think this site's users would benefit greatly from live chat. Questions would get answered faster, and ideas would flow around more easily. I don't know if that's asking for a lot, I've just seen other forums use it.

Web design conversations don't lend themselves well to chat.

I know what you mean - I felt like we were almost in a chat yesterday that when I answered your questions and got responses right away.

But I do see Wired's point - many of the questions take some time to answer, whether it is finding the right code, creating an image to illustrate a point, or just figuring out how to word the answer so it can be understood.

There's also the fact that members hail from so many different time zones.

That said, it would be nice added feature if it's not too hard to implement.

We also have to keep in mind that,

It takes away from the forum content, and it adds massive amounts of bandwidth usage to the server. Yes, it would be cool, and yes I frequent many forums that have that functionality. When it gets down to it, its all about critical mass, only a massive forum will be able to pull off that feature, and it be enough people on around the clock to make it useful.

    Just a personal opinion!
    Peace, Mike

Yeah, well I hadn't considered the bandwidth issue.

I've been feeling lately that this is becoming a real community for me where I can meet up with folks who have like interests and viewpoints. I live in a community that is 96% French speaking, my daughter does Facebook and my husband hates computers, flat out - I have to print his business e-mails and give them to him on paper!

There are people here who seem like friends, and I'd like to know them better. Chat would be one way to do that without having to hijack threads to post personal stuff, or jokes etc.

Maybe an alternative would be to start a thread in the "General discussion" area for that.

maybe an idea as a trial to see how it goes instead of a chat, a shoutbox?

i also have the feeling the chat will get empty most of the time.
every time i come on here and post i only get reply late in the evening as most people on here are asleep since i am in the UK

Mike actually raised the best point of all. Chats consume a whole heap of bandwidth, and most (if not all) of them don't allow for chat logging.

If you have a chat and get your question answered quickly, that's all well and good, but then what happens to the next user with the same question who didn't see the chat? That doesn't solve that user's issue. If we can solve that and keep the bandwidth to a minimum, it's a great idea, but I'm not sure we can.

Besides, would the Mare want to read 100 "use off-page and on-page SEO for best Google rankings" in real-time?

Well, actually, Game, I need all the advice about off-page SEO I can get! I am having a hard time with it - it is such a difficult concept to grasp, it's almost as if it doesn't exist in the real world!
