A 404 error page should actually send a server response of 404 back to the requestor.

The site is linked has a server response tool to show the actual response that say a search engine will get if they request a page on your server, and that custom error page responds back to it.

If it sends a 200 response ( a 200 response is the standard response when a page exist ), the search engine will index that page instead of the one it requested.

Same with all other custom error pages, they should send back the response code appropriate for the page... Regardless of the actual content on the page...

Long story short, if your server responds with too many custom error pages with a 200 response but the same content, the search engine will quit indexing your site because it thinks all hose pages are the same.

    Hope that makes sense.

Google server response codes for php, it should give you some instructions on how to send the correct response back when the page is displayed.

OK thank you, while that's not top priority right now, I WILL certainly look into it. I sure didn't know that, though!

That's the problem with most hosting companies "custom error pages", when used, although helpful ( or can be ) to users, they can hurt a sites rankings if there are many errors that cause the site to display them.

Just thought I would mention it.
