Depends on your definition of "good"... And what type of work you're hoping to land.

If you're wanting to get hired on with a large company ... Chances are slim, unless of course you're portfolio is one of those with a really big WOW factor.

Many companies that focus on web design hire web design people with nothing but a portfolio... But again... Depends on the portfolio and if it fits into what their idea of good is...

I got into this industry a long time ago... No degree.. No formal training... But I've spent literally thousands of hours of my time learning, teaching myself, researching....

I've know of companies that hire people to work on their web site as a part time gig.. and finally realize just how important their site is... Then hire the person full time... Then realize the benefit of such things as intranets ... Portals... And web applications...

And there are tons of companies that hire web design as "per contract"... And some will keep you extremely busy...

Make sure you're portfolio is good before you send in a job application referencing it.
