    Copyright of design

    Hello WebDesignForums!
Me and a friend are about to design a website. We are afraid that if we let us inspire of other websites designs, that we might not be able to because of copyright.
How much do you have to copy a design, to get caught by copyright of webdesign

Inspiration is one thing. Copying is something completely different.

Here's my take on the subject...people will notice if you use a theme or copy someone else's design or use stock images and things. You can get away with small portions of it, but my thing is "any more than about 30-40% is usually a copy." That's why, when I do layouts (and I don't do them very often because I'm a developer), I do them from scratch. I can't get busted that way.

As far as copyright itself, that's a very grey and nuanced area. It's usually jurisdiction-specific as well i.e. the place where the site owner(s) operate from. Here's a site that explains plagiarism and copyright a lot better than I ever could: . Jonathan's a smart cat.
