I have had a problem with my craptop a few times (mostly from playing games on it that I shouldn't be ) where I get an error at start up and a failiure to boot.

Normally, I would resolve this by using the recovery CD, but I lose all my files and that makes me mad . Plus I have lost the damn CD .

I have read stuff on the error, but I cannot seem to get it working, so I was wondering if any of you have succesfully cured your comp of it...
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
I hope anybody can shed some light on this $%*^*"( error that has made my life a misery.

    Thanks.

    PS: Check the dollar offer

I've had windows errors before, and I've re-installed windows over itself again. This resets all of your window's settings, but it doesn't format anything else.

That's quite a dollar offer JR, hopefully you can get this fixed.

It's looking in the legacy support folder if the OS is Windows XP. The system folder for XP is WINNT but a WINDOWS folder is available for older apps. It's probably a piece of software that's not fully compatible with XP.

Can you boot into safe mode? If so try uninstalling any potentially dodgy apps (usually games) and see if that helps. You've gotta uninstall them through control panel so that any registry keys that point to files they use are removed as well. That may solve the problem.

I'll have a look in knowledge base to see if there is anything else there that may be of help.

Nope, I cannot boot Windows in any mode. So I cannot get rid of, or install anything.

    thanks for your help

I am currently trying to make some boot disks and see if that works, I am not sure if I have tried that before though.

XP installs into a Windows folder, not WINNT.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
When it says this error, it usually mentions the bad file above or below this error. What is the file? BTW< have you tried going into safe mode? Who makes the laptop?

I must be using a strange version of XP because mines installed in a WINNT folder on a cleanly repartitioned disk.

Every single version of XP I've installed (OEM, retail) of both Home and Pro have gone into the Windows folder.

What did you do to fix it?
