I知 living in Russia now, I知 engaged in web design and I have 1 year experience. Is it real to find work related to web design in USA for me? (At least remote, but I want to know is it real to find a job and immigrate).
PS: I知 HTML editor now so I know HTML/CSS as well plus usability, ergonomics and other design theory too.

The market is tough over here right now. HTML-editors are a dime a dozen, too. You'll need to know more than HTML to even have a chance at finding a job. An impressive portfolio is a must too.

The sad fact of the matter is that if you are looking to emmigrate on the strength of your job you have to be the best at something that most people can't do.

I would say that at the moment Western Europe is easier to get started in because they are a little behind the trend in Internet business (excluding Britain) - America is so much on the ball that they are exporting a lot of people themselves.

Everybody knows HTML so you won't get very far with that. I would suggest specialising in something a little more involved such as database design or programming. Even then you'll find it tough as computers are very much the in thing at the moment.

Don't give up though - excel and you will succeed. I wish you all the best.

Thanks for the detailed replies! I told about HTML because in Russia HTML Designer is well paid (for Russia of course) job. Most of beginner HTML designers don`t care about browsers such as Opera, MoZilla etc. So HTML designers that can make design draft suitable for all browsers, all screen resolutions, optimize code and use CSS properly, are respected I still have one more question: I want to train a bit more and make template portfolio that will meet the requirements of templatemonster.com or liquid-2d.com As far as I know these two sites are American, right? So if I`ll get a job there if it will be a plus? By the way, unfortunately, I still can`t cope with Php+MySQL programming but if php coders are required I can learn it =)
PS: One of my American penpals told me that application for a citizenship is a good way to immigrate, is it true or false?

If you can do well in Russia as a web designer, I say stay there. You won't find anything here, especially if you need a sponsorship for your Visa. The market is way oversaturated as it is.

I know it's not America, but it's close enough so that this becomes a logical extension.

Don't bother with Canada either if you only know basic HTML. I'd say 95% of the resumes I get are for people who know basic HTML and graphic/Flash design only. If you don't have a web programming language under your belt (I'd suggest either ASP or PHP myself), just say "nyet" (the only Russian word I know besides "da") to emigrating.

So American and Canadian designers know Php as well as Photoshop and flash??? I thought that web programming and graphic design are being performed by different people. And what about people who know Php/ASP? I know HTML/CSS at expert level =) Photoshop and Fireworks too. So if I`ll learn Php/MySQL would I be able to find job in Canada or other country (at least a chance to find it)?

I can`t stand this dreadful country you know =) The reason is not in money, I just want to move to another country and I`m searching for any possible ways to do it I wanted to start learning Php/MySQL but had no time and reason. By the way, what about Perl?

I don't know if it's just me or not, but I don't see Perl being used very much any more these days. PHP/ASP seem to be the big two (hence the two separate forums here at WDF for them).

As far as separating web programming and graphic design, this is sometimes done and sometimes not done. I have people in my company who are programmers, people who are designers (these are the guys who are easiest to replace), and people who are a little bit of both. It's the ones who are a little bit of both I tend to utilize the most since it's easier to give them a project and let them work at it themselves than to try and coordinate a team effort (yeah, I know, it's supposed to be a leadership thing, but I'm working to that.)

I would say that your one shot at finding a "job" (and I use that word very loosely since about all you're likely to get is contract work, and I'd actually be one of your better bets for that) would be to do three things:

    1) Design some English-only sites and make sure the English is absolutely perfect in it.
    2) Show that you have some experience with a programming language.
    3) Have a site that shows something different (or at least a different twist on a concept) than anyone else has. This is a lot easier said than done, however.

Knowing Photoshop, Fireworks, HTML, and CSS just isn't enough these days.

    Cold,

    Two points....
    1. Most "web designers" here (the employed ones, anyway) know more than just design. They know programming, database architecture and development, etc. The people you're competing with will have college educations and will be "experts" with HTML, CSS, Adobe Everything, Flash, PHP & MySQL (or equivalent), and then some. These are people who've been in a competitive market for over 5 years... the ones who have survived are the best of the best and know pretty much everything.
    2. You are at a double-disadvantage, because you're coming from Russia looking for employment. There are two reasons (skills aside) that an employer in the US wouldn't choose you: 1) Loyalty to America and its citizens... giving you a job is the same as sending an American to the unemployment line, and 2) It costs them more. They have to fund your visa and sponsor you... BIG negative. These factors mean that you have to be the best in the world to get a job.

Having said that, WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU WANT TO LEAVE RUSSIA?!? The women there are HOT!!! If I had to pick a place to move TO, it would probably be Russia. If you moved to the US, you'd be really disappointed in the women here, unless you picked Miami or LA.

Yeah, nothing like those emaciated, starving women with their ribcages poking through their shirts and shrunken heads. Oh baby, gimme some of that.

Skinny models, you can keep those,
I like big cornfed midwestern h*es.
