I assume you've got a firewall protecting you against attacks through unprotected ports? The days of having to actively open or download a virus are gone.

You can't always see them running in you processes either.

I also don't run a virus scanner. Common sense protects me just fine

Risky. Not only for you but for anybody who's email address you may have on your PC and for anybody to whom you may send files.

Nah. I use my brain to filter virii, so it's all good. Besides, I don't keep e-mail addresses in my address book.

The point I'm trying to make though is that not all viruses are deployed when you click a link or open an email or download a file or open a macro or do anything at all. There has been a spate of viruses that can arrive over TCP/IP, HTTP, FTP or another protocol and use your PC as a means to deploy to other PC's. All this is done without any user knowledge or activity whatsoever.

True, but that's what common sense is for. All ports blocked on the router, all security patches done on the PC, etc.

As long as you keep that in mind you should be ok. Just run a quick check every now and again, just in case.
