I accidentally deleted a file which caused the the CD in a CDRW/DVD to malfunction. That is the file must have belonged to the driver. This is on fairly old - 500Mhz Compaq computer, my sister's eek.

The trouble is I'm no expert on PCs and I've got to explain the repair over the phone.

My question is does the Operating System, Windows 98 have a generic driver that would kick in if the corrupted driver was uninstalled and the computer restarted? Because I don't know if the driver on a CD exists.

I asked this on another forum and someone said it doesn't have a driver and that I might have deleted a 'DOS driver' whatever that is. I really wanted to know how to fix it but this has confused me more.

Can anybody suggest a course of action?

Windows 98 has abismal system protection compared to Windows XP, and also no System Restore. You are better off installing whatever software and drivers came with the burner.

If it's an old version of 98 the driver may need to load from the autoexec.bat file before windows starts up.

Have you tried downloading drivers from the manufacturers web site and installing those? If that doesn't work then you could try re-installing Windows onto the machine over the top of the current install.

WARNING: Don't try reinstalling unless you are sure of what you are doing, because of the way early versions of Windows 98 use legacy files it can seriously freak out if you end up with two separate installations running parallel to each other.

Could make a Windows 98 Boot Disk, then sys the drive, which will load the default CD rom drivers.

nah, that sounds plain stupid. I've lived with Win98 for about five years before moving to WinXP. Your best bet is to delete the cd-rom drive from your computer (via the Control Panel), and then have Windows 98 redect the drive (Add/Remove Hardware). If this doesn't install the drivers properly, then you'll need a driver disk as this means that they are not included as default in Win98. Do a Google on your cd-drive model/manufacturer and try to find the driver installers if you have lost your CD, which is a common problem.
