There are many more features to consider.

    1. Maximum price
    2. Location (US/UK/etc.)
    3. Wireless
    4. Battery life
    5. Screen resolution
    6. Burner type

I prefer ultraportables myself as I do not see the sense in large laptops when I have a perpetually more powerful desktop at home.

You're not going to get that for around $1000, that I can guarantee.

Try as hard as you can to get good video, especially if you're going to do any graphics work on them. Laptops usually cheat out and share memory with the system which I've found tends to reduce speed drastically.

17" ??? Why so freakin' big. I inherted a 15" screen and it's massive (laptops always seem bigger since they're clear LCD and closer to your eyes). I would reduce it to 15" and you'll be able to find that somewwhere.

Unfortunately, I agree you're probably going to have to up your price range, laptops are exceedingly expensive (and even more expensive to repair).

Laptop screens of 15" ar more or less like a 16" (doesn't exist, but gives an idea), because you don't have black space around the vision-frame.
    EDIT- Like a 16" CRT I mean.

Honestly, I can handle a higher resolution on a 15" LCD laptop screen than I can on my 19" CRT (non flatscreen). So take as what you will, I think that 15" will suit you fine considering it goes to at least 1280x1024 (will be an odd size though, i.e. mine is 1400x1280 or something similar)
