Yes, use google instead. If nothing appears you could use it.
BTW- I found after registering my domain (xtdesign.net) that there is a WEB DESIGN COMPANY in belgium (xtdesign.be). At least we look almost like a national division of the company
And I appear before in google, so I hope he wont "steal" my customers

Listen to the others: GOOGLE!!! There's no international list of businesses that a business has to join that I know of, but if you Google, that should turn up any trace of a business on the net. If a business name doesn't show up on Google, they either don't exist, or they aren't anything to worry about (IMO).

    LavaJava... the J2EE Specialists ;-)

Seriously, though, it is not company names that are important it is trademarks... there are many duplicate company names... shops or tradesmen often have duplicate company names... how many "Direct Plumbing" companies are there in the UK? Lots I suspect... they have registered names like "Direct Plumbing (Windsor) Ltd" or "Direct Plumbing 2003 Ltd"...

...however, you try setting up a chip shop called "Harry Ramsdons" in your home town and see how quickly you get closed down... :-)

Now, if you take LavaSoft that may well be trademarked. But something like LavaTech ? LavaTech.com appears to be a Canadian software shop... if you set up your own design business in the UK providing websites to a UK market I doubt they could claim you've violated their trademark as they don't have a market here...

Well I'm thinking about going with my original business name: Genmedia. Don't think anyone has that. Better check.

EDIT: Some General Galleries have www.genmedia.com but I can get www.genmedia.co.uk. A museum/gallery thing shouldn't be anything to worry about should it? And besides, the 'gen' in my business means Generation.

You could always go with Lavalife. :-D

Seriously, what if you just bastardized the words a bit? Like Lavatek or Lavaspheer or something. Then do a GOOGLE search, as so many have told you, and you should be good to go?

Who cares, most companies won't care about something like that. It would take a load of time and energy to sue a small startup company for having a simliar name.

Now, maybe if you called yourself "Sony" or "Microsoft" you could expect issues.
