I just want to upload a file to my server and have it begin downloading when its link is clicked.
I don't want the page to change or have the user go through a "save this link target" type of thing.......just want them to click and get it.

I know there must be some kind of simple tag to do this, but I can't find it anywhere.

    <a href="path/to/filename.zip">click to DL</a>

If its a file it will usualy promt you to save it or open it, some movies like mpeg's might auto play in the browser, in that case they will have to 'save target as'

Even if you could, why would you want to disable this? The only way it is going to just 'get it' without a prompt is as mimic stated that the file is set to open up in an application on the users machine.. the file will automatically be stored somewhere in the temporary directory.

If files are allowed to just download without some sort of feedback/prompt it would be a fault on the browser and a security risk.

I assume you want a pop-up to appear (asking where you want it saved) when you click the link. There are lots of threads/posts dealing with that (here at WDF). You basically have to type in some header response code, so that the file is not opened in the browser (images) or a known application (most files except zip files).

(Content-type: application/octet-stream is the header that forces the download option to appear)
