For the most part all I do is print design, recently I started working with a novice programmer to redo a site. Not knowing too much about web design applications I asked if I could design in illustrator and then have him program it. Well, the site is up and it's viewable but it isn't searchable (in that search engines have nothing to search), which kind of defeats the purpose of having a website, especially from a client perspective. The site was designed in illustrator, then sliced up in fireworks and then exported to dreamweaver. The main problem is that technically there is no body text, what should read as the body text is just an image sliced up.

If anyone could give me some advice on ways to combat that, please be my invited guest. Also, after this fiasco I'm really just considering jumping in myself and learning it, I know some basic html, how advanced would I need to be in html to be a decent site designer?

The site address by the way is:

I see you worked hard with the Meta Tags ... but those are pretty
much ignored these days by search robots. Content is everything!

You have no choice but to erase the graphics part that is text,
and replace it with "real" text. You can make the graphic
image (without the text) a background image and position the
real text over it using CSS or HTML, whatever.

Use your contact page as an example:

The form is positioned over a background image. Do the same
thing with the rest of your pages. You can control the font
size, and color, but the font type will be somewhat out of your
control. You can specify the use of "arial", but the correct
font will only be seen if the visitor has the font loaded.
So don't pick any fancy strange fonts. Use Helvetica or Arial.

Erase the bottom line with phone numbers and make that "real"
text also. One last thing ... most people expect a logo to
appear in the upper left corner. Since your site extends out
past my browser (800 X 600), I can't see the whole logo without
horizonal scrolling. A lot of people have smaller browsers like
me. Move it from the right to the left.

People that use Flash, Frames, and do what you did, really get
frustrated when their sites are ignored by the search bots.

Then, submit to Google ... their site submit is still free ...
one of the few free one's left. But remember to wait anywhere
from 3-6 months before your site appears. It takes a while.
