    Curious question here..

I'm looking for some decent, free forum software. Hear me out before you say "GO BUY A LICENSE WITH SOFTWARE xxx"

A business partner and I are developing a large site. We will be using vBulletin for the site itself after launch, but for the time being we are looking to put up forums where ideas can be swapped and what not.

It isn't practical to spend money on a vBulletin license for both the dev forums and site forums, especially since the dev forums are a short term thing.

Can someone recommend some freeware forums that have decent admin tools?

This might be a stretch but anything will work.

IIRC, vB lets you set up a main forum and a dev forum with the same license, as long as there are no external links to the forum, and it truly is for dev purposes only.

InvisionBB has a free version I think.

www.theadminzone.com - Forum stuff site - really good!

I agree with GeZe - if you want a cheap (free) and cheerful forum phpBB is a good choice. It's easy to install and customise.

phpBB has also had a flurry of security holes found in it lately. I'd stay back from it for now until it's been stable for a bit.

I'm not worried because it will be behind a password protected area. Everyone who is going to be using the dev forums are all long-term site contributers, so no worries.

Thanks for info though, I was thinking of using phpBB on my server. Guess not.

phpBB is pretty good, as is Simplemachines (the evolution of YabbSE)
