I'm just getting started in the wonderful world of webdesign. and my question is: What can you expect for a salary being a self employed web designer?, and what is the best way to get started anyway?. I want to start out slowly, making cheap personal web pages, just to get my feet wet, and take it from there, but I'm not sure how to even find clients. If anyone has any ideas, I would very much appreciate it.

depends on how good you are (vague I know). I've heard anywhere from $500 USD / year to 500,000 USD / year.

Thanks for you're quick reply. Like I said, I'm still pretty new at this. I'm almost done with a diploma course, but I want to learn a lot more and make this a full time job. I realize that that will take a while, so just to get started, working weekends on small projects is what I am looking forward to do in hopefully only a few months. Thanks again.

It all depends on how commited you are. Even though it is the same product, McDonalds make millions upon millions, but the guy at the burger stand down the street probably makes just enough to get by. So this really is not a valid question because it all depends on you, however I know as a new designer it is probably the question you think about most often.

Thanks Glyakk, I know you're right. It's probably one of the first things you think about when you get started as a web designer, and of course comm
itment will be the most important issue in the path of success. I don't mean to sound as if money would be the only thing I'm thinking about because it's not. Even if I didn't make a dime on this, I would still continue making pages, and my will to learn more would never fade away.
