Firstly what is a widget? i.e. what is it used for?

Secondly is RSS a programming language or just a means of transporting data? Could someone briefly tell me what it is good for and if it is worth picking up

A widget can mean anything in any context. In most cases, it either means any fictional product, or a small program that runs on your desktop showing basic information like the weather, CPU usage, etc.

RSS is a subset of XML. It is used to create a news feed of chosen topics on your site.
