How do you design an e-commerce website? What language and what tools do you need and does anyone know what tools does amazon uses.

If you willing to learn a fairly new web language. Try Ruby on Rails. Its really powerful and I believe google uses it.

I think amazon uses php, which has a huge community behind it.

Funky, it's not the tool, it's the person BEHIND the tool. Is there a particular goal you are trying to accomplish?

Totally agree with Wired. You can do an e-commerce site with PHP, Ruby, .NET, Perl, whatever ...

It just depends on what you're confident with. The hard part of e-commerce would be the connection to the bank or whatever. The other part, creating the cart etc, is fairly straightforward in whatever language you pick.
Note on code: If I give code, please note that it is simply sample code to demonstrate an effect. It is not meant to be used as-is; that is the programmer's job. I am not responsible to give you support or be held liable for anything that happens when using my code.
