I've recently been contracted to do a web design for a local restaurant, and a feature they want on their site is the ability for the staff to update their soup of the day. What I want them to be able to do is go to a backend page where they can use check boxes to select the available soups and have them updated on the main page, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that. What kind of scripts, etc. should I use? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Although it sounds simple, it never is.

You will have to think about security, someone could discover/find this admin page and change the soup of the day, (e.g. not a staff member).

Another potential security hole would be to spoof your form. By that I mean someone creating a form on their PC or their webspace and editing the form fields, meaning it could be possible to deface your main page.

So you would need some login system.

For the actual functionality of your request, a simple text file and Perl or PHP is suitable.

Or, if you want it the easy way, provide a separate text file and image file on your server, and tell them to update these files. Much less elegant, but it gets the job done.

Otherwise, yes, you need a login system first.
