I'm starting a new business with the name "Tao" (can't reveal details at this phase of development).

Off-handedly, I queried the owner of tao.com for his selling price on the name (he's not currently using it).

He replied with an asking price of $350k USD.

I know this is an unreasonable asking price, but I need to know what the name is worth, because I don't want to offend him.

I was thinking I'd be shelling out $25-30k max for the name. Does this sound reasonable, or is my idea of valuation way off? I mean, it's not like this is "coke.com" or something... there's no "tao" brand that I'm aware of that gives the name that kind of value.

Anyone know where I can go to get a "real" appraisal of name value?

Well, I checked at www.leapfish.com and it told me that the name is worth $361,000.

    uhhhh...

But www.transio.com is also valued at $35,000 so who can say if LeapFish is giving valid figures...?

I could buy a Porche 911 Turbo today if I sold the WDF domain, according to that site.

By comparison, Google is worth a slightly low $10m.

Like any capital expenditure within a business, you have to make a case for spending the money. This usually means an evaluation of how the purchase will either save or make money. With any outlay in the thousands, capital value also has to be a factor, a little difficult to establish on something you will never actually own.
    End of Line.

Perhaps you're not doing all you could to earn as much as you can from this site. A valuation of $150k simply means you're getting enough traffic to generate what... $20-30k a year? With a little work to put in the right layout, content, and advertising, you could definitely do that.

If I were you, I'd focus on doing those things and use the $2k a month of residual income to pay for the Porsche AND the insurance, and KEEP the site. :-D

    That doesn't make any sense.
