    Hi All,

I do not do sites professionally and I have no idea what the going rate is, but a friend of mine told me today what he paid for his site a year ago and I think after checking it out he got ripped off! could someone please tell me what a fair price would have been for his site.
Maybe I am missing something that would explain it and I am wrong in my assumption. If not can you at least send me in the right direction so I can tell him what he should have paid so he does not get ripped off again.
When I tell you how much he paid your going to choke from laughing so hard that someone had the nerve to charge it and that he actually paid him! Thank your for your help!

    Sue

Sorry I may not have explained myself correctly, they did not rip off the design or content, they charged him an amount that I think should have included the kitchen sink! I may not know what a fair price would be, but I can tell you what he paid is outrageous to me, I really upset him when I told him I think he overpayed by a huge amount and I just want to make sure I am not wrong in my assumption.

    Thanks,
    Sue

    Sue,

I charge about $2500 for a basic site of that complexity, but in my (not-so-humble) opinion the work I do is far superior.

The site you're linking to looks like amateurish work, and you can probably find designers all day who would produce the same level of work for $1000 or less.

Then again, some crappy designers charge an arm and a leg for crap work. A current client of mine paid around $15,000 to Network Solutions for www.dupageacupunctureandherbs.com - mind you this is Network Solutions - one of the biggest service-providers in the industry!

Thanks for the info and I completely agree with you and that is why I was shocked when he told me how much he paid. I could have done a better job myself and I am only on my 2nd website. I work for a law firm and I am doing the site for them. They bought a template a while ago and I am trying to customize it with different graphics and get the code up to speed, learn html, css and get it to validate and it is all very confusing when you are just learning it all. I get the concepts just don't know if I am putting it all together correctly especially since I am trying to work with a template I did not create. I would really love your feedback on it, oh what you would charge for it as well so I can tell my boss what deal he is getting!I hope you like it and if not I look forward to finding out what I need to work on. www.cohmlaw.com/subsite
Oh and my friend, He paid... are you ready for this..... $3,700 yup ! that's what I said! so I was right in my assumption huh?
    Thanks,
    Sue

    Sue,

I wouldn't say he was ripped off... $3700 is a reasonable rate for website design services from a company. I'm actually considering upping my rates to that range for a basic site. The part that's disappointing considering the investment is the level of taste and quality of the work performed rather than the amount paid. He should have an impeccable website for that price. Next time, he should research his web design company better before committing to spend so much!

BTW, your work on cohmlaw.com is really nice... one tip - redo the images on the top left as JPGs - the PNGs are taking a while to download (@ 200k+ each!!!) - a 60% JPG that size would have nearly the same quality and would probably be 20k (1/10th the size!) which would download instantaneously.

    Hi Steve,
I think I understand what you are saying...
It is not the price for that type of site but the quality of the site for that price? and He should get someone else next time.
Like I said I am new to all of this how do you go about setting your pricing? Is it worth getting into? I was thinking about going to school for it.
Thank you so much for your help I really appreciate it!
    Sue

Thank you that means a lot! I just moved and my computer crashed and I can not find my copy of photoshop to re-install so I only had an old version of fireworks to work with, I will download the gimp meanwhile and I will change them I promise! LOL!

The small web design company I work for charges about $500USD for a simple, four page site, that takes us about 5 hours to complete (give or take). I wouldn't say he got ripped off, but I would say I'm sure there are other designers out there who could do much more superior work for at least the same amount, if not less.
