I've been looking around web design sites, and I see some that are really expensive, and some that are really cheap. A couple friends of mine have approached me to build a site for them, and I want to know what a fair price would be. I would be creating all the graphics, layout, and database programming for them (its a clan site). So what would be a reasonable price to charge them? I don't want to go too cheap, but I also don't want to rip them off.

Giving a quote on a website job is tough, and everyone approaches it differently. One factor to consider is how bad you want the job, relative to how much they can pay. If you really want the job and they can't afford alot, taking the job on at a discount can be worth while down the road as you can add this job to your portfolio. Honestly my answer for you is to try to estimate how much you think they can afford, and charge them that amount, if it's acceptable to you.

My suggestion personally is not to bother. If it's a clan site, it'll be run as a non-profit hobby site for the most part. They're also generally not good things to put in your portfolio. If you got any more than a couple of hundred bucks for it, you'd be lucky.

Also, where will the site be hosted at? That can determine what tools you have available to yourself to design the site, and in turn, affect the price.

Since it's a gaming clan, my guess is they'll want a news page on the front, proabably a forum, as well as a member only login for certain areas. This area can be just a part of the forum, or can be a separate section altogether. To see an excellent version of what I'm talking about, check out http://www.unknown1s.com.
