i have read all kinds of search engine indexing tutorials but they sound like a politician, talking around the point but never quite making it.
So if anyone has any direct effective advice on the matter i would greatly appreciate it.

    thx for the read.

OK well i guess what i need is just trafic. i built my own traffic tracker complete with HTTP REFERRER and already have google webmaster tools as well as <meta but fall short on tag stuffing. images in the future will be premium so <img alt= is out. thanks so much for the read and your time.

you are not gonna get good traffic only with stuffing keywords in metas... do good backlinking with anchor text as the targeted keywords....

I bet this post gets stickied =P...

I have 8 years of experience in the search engine industry -- so if you want my professional tips here they are (if you don't skip down to the next article =P).

    1. Meta = Thumbs Down -- Let me say that having proper meta tags helps in the search engine rankings, however you can have a near optimized website with no meta data whatsoever! Search engines like MetaCrawler.com are extinct (though I occasionally use it to check my rankings) but the simple fact is, today search engines are using complex search algorithms to determine your site's relevance to the search term. Look at it like someone asking you for your professional opinion... In a question form... "Who is the president of the United States" The subject of that sentance is "president" so any site whom has "authority" (Authority meaning the term "president" is in the url, and it is ranked from http://domain=1/subdir=3/page=2 and content usually gets a relativily lower ranking) for the term president gets automatic dibs on the search term, now the algorithm starts to wind down by trying to cypther other nouns like "united states". Now, sites that have the keyword United States on a "presidental" website will get top hits. It of course is a much more complecated process but they're making the algorithems more "human-like" every day. With this much said, CONTENT IS THE ABSOLUTE KEY TO SEO!

    2. Make no mistake if a search engine can't see your content, its not getting indexed so it is absolutely impossible to "optimize" anything. Flash -- trash it, images, use only with CSS unless its an image associated with a subject (like news-related images) and make sure your design is 100% css, no tables, and no <img /> tags anywhere in your design (again content, news articles, etc can have some <img tags, thats fine). Finally, ensure that you're HTML is 100% XHTML compliant (check it at www.w3c.org). Just by following steps 1-2 you have ensured that your site is content rich, the search engines are picking up on every drop of content, and you're absolutely going to get search engine hits.

    3. SEF URLS -- Very important, especailly with Google. SEF (Search Engine Friendly) URLS is the structer of your website's URLs. If you're using plain ole html pages, you have nothing to worry about most likely, but if you're using PHP this is a huge problem that people don't realize hurts them. Having a URL http://www.yoursite.com/index.php?sh...34&view=normal tells a search engine what about the page? Nothing... Now lets try... http://www.yoursite.com/the-page-opt...the-page-name/ is SEF and ensures that the search engines know the relevancy of the content of your pages to the URL Structure (you get points with Google for this -- boat loads) plus this ensures that users have something to relate to as well not to mention it just looks prettier. This is accomplished already with some pre-made software like WordPress and MediaWiki, however for custom PHP scripts it would be wise to use Apache's Mod_Rewrite to optimize your URLs.

    4. Site Mapping -- This is another important key usually overlooked, every site, EVERY SITE, needs a sitemap (not the one that just lays out your content) that is in generic sitemap XML format. This ensures that Google, MSN, Yahoo, and other popular search engines are even crawling pages you don't have linked in on your site or links that are obscure from search engines (like flash, javascript, and ajax menus).

    5. Tag Everything! -- Last but certianly not least, make sure your links, images, and other HTML elements are taged with the alt= and rel=. This tells a lot to search engines and how important the link is to follow, or the image is for the page etc. This technique can make-or-break a page's search engine rankings that is not on your home-page, so ensure you have the alt and rel data properly placed (not hard to look up the techniques).

Follow those 5 easy steps, and you're well on your well to having a well indexed site that Google and other search engines will enjoy making love with.... eehem... I mean indexing.
