This message was was copied from the joomal forums where I also posted it, If joomal is not the way to go for this project by all means please let me know.

Ok so I am looking for people interested in helping me with my yet to be named site witch will be kind of like a hopatcong underground site. Almost like a vigilante underground site. It's going to have loads of anti-drug material dealing with hopatcong with everything from dealers too where they go and how to tell if your loved ones are using this is mainly going to be my department. I also want to add a charity event section along with ads and flyers for the local music scene I figure this will prolly be handled by mustache magazine and cornershop. I also want to add like a clean up hopatcong section where we organzie groups of volunteers and clean up certain sections of hopatcong. I also want to set up a forum community for ideas and what not. I also want to set up a market place section where people can sell trade barter
want to add a "Scumbag Watchlist" A place where user can go of course this will be monitored but it be place where you can put how someone robbed you of money or did something scumbaggish to you so people know. I myself will be at the top of that list for sure because I was a big time scumbag.I am also open for any other ideas I have the CS3 Creative Suite so I have all the computer programs needed for flash design website design photoshop illustrator and adobe reader for articles and ezines and what not I just need man power. I need articstic people who want to help with stickers flyers adds.
I also want to include the local music scene big time on this website, Just need people who want to help If you bring me a cd I have the adobe CS3 Creative suite so I have all the programs needed I can burn you a copy. It is pretty cheap buying a domain name too I think

That was taken from the facebook description of the group, I currently live in a town in new jersey known as Lake Hopatcong and myself and a few friends had the idea to create a website for all things Hopatcong. Just not an ordinary town website though a website aimed towards our generation Highschool through College. We want to make the site kind of urbanish if that makes sense kind of counter-culture almost style. As of right now we have a few def. things we want the site to offer. An Ezine section where a local music scene magazine known as Moustache Magazine can have an online magazine, I am thinking maybe blog type extension for this. In the future we plan on adding more sections like this. We also want to have a charity section where information can be posted about getting together to pick up trash, creating hiking trails in area known as "Devils Footprint", just a section of the website for people to go and see what kind of events are coming up that they can be apart of to help with the town. We also want to have a social section for local festivals wether they be music festivals, free running competions, all different kinds of sports tournements where the ticket money and sort of profit goes towards fixing something up in town or fixing the skate park. We also want to have an anti-drug section as our town is slowly becoming a wasteland of drug use coming from the city and newark area. We will post all kinds of anti-drug adds here along with, recovery information, recovery storys, numbers to call, na meetings, stuff like that.

I really just need someone who can help me get the base set and give me a kick in the *** so I know where to go from there. I am in no way looking for someone to design this whole thing I am just looking for someone to design a cool template and show me how to upload it, At first I plan on hosting my own domain from my computer (HopatcongUnderground.Org) but I do not even know how to do that. So if anyone is interested in this most likely pretty massive project please email me at hopatcongundergroundteam@gmail.com or im me at omgtravisonfire . I could really use some assistance with this.

well the good news is you sound like this is going to be way hard. prob harder then it really is actually, and yet you are still interested. so this should turn out well for you. the first order of biz will need to be getting a hosting account with mysql, and php. then a person very good with graphics to get the look just how you want. then you will need a person good with coding to bring the site to a functional state. at that point you will need to pause and evaluate the final leg and fine tuning before bringing it live.

Thank you for posting Dorky, For the time being until the site is completey functional I would like to run the hosting account off my computer. My connection is always but if I must I am sure I can get the funding for a hosting account it cannot be that much money.

This will require a lot of work from quite a few people with all the different categories and updating that's involved. I doubt you are going to find many people to do designs and writing for free (I'm assuming you are looking for pro bono work), let alone set up a lot of dynamic areas in the site. If you do get a crew together for free, then you have to worry if they are going to see it through and not leave you hanging half way through. It sounds like you have about 10 sites in one planned!

At some point this is going to cost money, at least something, and the cost of hosting will probably and should be the least of your worries.

You say the word "we" so it sounds like you may have some help, so that's good.

So, to start up, I would say you need the following:

1). A php coder, along with html & css
2). Someone to do some decent writing
    3). Graphic designer
4). Someone to gather update info and general info for all those categories you have
5). Hosting, I wouldn't do it from your own computer

That will get you started, but your going to have a hard time finding someone to work for free unless they live in that area.

lots of us new to design like myself so probono work is available. i dont know that this site requires specialist from every area. i dont see why this would take such graphically intense imaging. the backend would mostly be sql querys so that wouldnt need a lot of engeniering either.

OOhhh Dorky! Everything is so easy for you! Hmmm... let's have a look at what's involved.

    - A market place, buy, sell, trade (that's a whole site right there)
    - Anti drug section
    - Charity event section
    - A forum
    - Organize volunteer groups
    - A scumbag watchlist section
    - Need stickers, flyers, ads
    - A music scene "big time"
    - Online magazine section
    - Social section

No need for a graphics person? Just some sql queries? He's going to need at least 2 people to put all that together, and that's just the site itself. He might find 1 person that can do it all, but they sure ain't gonna do it for free. Then (insert number here) more people to gather all this info from the various sections, do write ups and make it interesting to read, talk to people, and keep it all up to date. Then probably one other person just for the heck of it. Sure one or two people COULD build a site like this, but it probably wouldn't be worth a crap! Most of the work will be outside the site building part.

    I could go on...

Edit::: oh yeah, there will have to be some money spent somewhere.

lol. come on man. give them some hope . flyrs and so forth are not web design so thats out. social, music, and events can all be covered by a forum builder. the e-mag as well unless you are selling it then it goes with the e-store that can be done with a builder as well. the watchlist you can create with google maps and iframe it in, and the antidrug on the home page. many of the builders like drupal and others have forum and e-store moduals so to tie all of this together under one theme would be much easier as well.

I think HopatcongUnder just found someone to help him with his project

    Dorky,
Start with the Drupal template and then help him set-up his own server,
since he stated he knows nothing about that. (and do it over the phone
since you won't be in the same town as he is).

    Seriously,
The Drupal template, setup, customizing would be a big job for 3 people.
The server thing is a whole other deal. I think I'm leaning toward Steve's opinion.

But this is a good discussion about how things look on paper and how things
will actually take place. If he throws enough money at it, the project will go
forward quickly. If he wants to do it for free, the project is dead. period.

Agree. My Blue Water Hot Deals site, as small as it is, is a ton of work. Maybe it's different because I have customers and invoicing to keep up with, but there were a lot of things that came about that we didn't figure in when planning the project.

For hopatcong, gathering all that info and getting into the site AND keeping it updated and fresh WILL be a lot of work. I'm starting to repeat myself so that's all I'm gonna say.

Dorky, I love your attitude though. That's how things get done. Your like me (I think), you say you can do something, even if maybe you can't, and you find a way to do it or somehow learn how. It's called being assertive, and it's a great attribute to have to be successful.

How much money, Would 150 cover the costs ? I would be doing all the updating and each section would have its own admin who I would show how to connect to site remotely as I am doing this through joomla. So each section will have there own section and just privalleges to that section where they can upload news and what not
