What is the minimum width most web designers use now? Is it still 800px for a webpage - or is it now acceptable to create wider pages??

People still 800px browser windows, but I would guess the majority is wider now.
I sort of like 950px .. just a personal preference.

1024x768. After subtracting browser scrollbars, borders, etc., I use 970 pixels wide.

Many thanks to both Miseim and Filburt1 - I agree that 970 will give a far nicer looking website. Does anyone know - roughly - what percentage of users can't view 970px and still need 800px???

    jj1,

What is the minimum width most web designers use now?

Itís not the proper question, if web designer make web site for client, he should to ask question him, who is it designes for.

I have designed web site for architectural studio and their clients are wealthy people. Most of them use min resolution 1,280 px. So I would almost lost job when I insisted on 1,024 x 768 px.

Client is always right, it is an old saying. At the end you always can make a liquid web design layout, which is compatible with every screen resolution.

Many thanks Miseim - the stats on the w3schools site were just what I wanted and have changed quite a bit in the last 2 years - only 4% now use 800 or less as compared with 14% a couple of years ago. I think I will now go for larger designs as they do look better.
WebPrezentacija - many thanks. Yes I agree that you need to consider who you are designing for.

    Hi,

Personally i still use 800 and will do unless specified by a customer (I always ask). I know the facts say only 4% use 800px but it seems to me its a lot more than that. A lot of the people i visit still seem to insist on using the larger screen.

It always depends on the demographic and geographic aspects. I designed a site for a restaurant that resides in the country where I know a lot of users own farms and live on old dirt roads and such. I'm sure the percentage of 800 users is a lot more than 4%. So I designed it at 800. On the other hand, I built a site for an industrial builder whose clients are going to be quite wealthy, and have newer computers, so I designed it at 1024.

Always take into consideration who your client is.

I usually code in 1024x768 but because of the scroll bar I make it 1000px wide.
