    Hello,
In the recent couple weeks, the unique hits I am getting increased by almost 100%, from around 150 a day to almost 300 a day. I am not complaining but I dont have any idea where they are coming from. I was just updating my site as usual and I checked the site statistics and backlins and did not see anything out of ordinary or added. Any ideas how did this happen?

I'm guessing those hits are not people, but search robots.
Yahoo, Google, MSN crawl the sites very often.

But why did this happen all of a sudden I am still not sure. The site is up since 2 years. And there was 2-3 occasions where the hits jumped suddenly like this (may be not 100% but 30-50%). What is a search robot and why do they visit a site much more all of a sudden? How about returning visitors? They also increased but not as much. May be by 10%...

    Or a spamming robot?

I'm guessing your increase is not human.

i have google analytics too and it gives pretty much the same results. okay i agree that the increase is due to bots. another question here. when i say "my website has so many unique hits" would that include these spamming bots too? or how do i distinguish between spamming bots coming to the site and real people? and when people talk about their website hits, would it usually include these kind of hits too?

Google Analytics breaks down the "hits" according to keywords used to reach your site, or search engine used to reach your site or referring sites etc. Looking at the details will give you a better idea.
